Artist's Statement

Jane Dahmen has explored subject matter drawn from coastal and inland scenes of New England since 1968.  Her work consists of contemporary landscapes and still lifes that are recognizable even as they extend the boundaries of perception.

Her recent series, large-scale landscapes (averaging six by seven feet), create an environment, engulfing the viewer and bringing the outside in. Still-lifes, taken from scenes in her home, also continue to be a recurring subject in her paintings.

Her work has been recognized in numerous solo and group shows, including the Portland Art Museum, the Center for Maine Contemporary Art, and the Maine Audubon Society, and has been reviewed in local and regional publications. Her paintings have been collected by individuals and private collectors, including a past President of the United States, and corporations such as the Federal Reserve Bank and AT&T. UNICEF used one of her images as a card, and three of her paintings were distributed world wide as posters by Graphique de France. She lives and paints in Newcastle, Maine.
